CETL Launches Faculty Training Series on AI in Higher Education

The Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL), in collaboration with the Office of Faculty Research (OFR), launched a faculty training series on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in higher education on 18 June 2026. Held at the ULAB campus, the initiative aims to equip faculty members with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively integrate AI into teaching, learning, research, and academic practice.
The programme was inaugurated by ULAB Vice Chancellor Professor Shamsad Mortuza and brought together more than 30 faculty members from across the university. In his opening remarks, Professor Mortoza highlighted the importance of maintaining human agency in an AI-driven world. He emphasized that while AI offers significant opportunities, educators must remain critical and responsible users of the technology. He also encouraged faculty members to embrace innovation and adapt to the rapidly evolving higher education landscape.
The first session, titled “Teaching with AI: Pedagogical Shifts, Possibilities, and Challenges in Higher Education,” was facilitated by Iram Mehrin, Senior Lecturer at the Center for Language Studies (CLS). The session examined the transformative impact of AI on higher education, focusing on emerging pedagogical approaches, opportunities for enhanced learning, and the ethical challenges associated with AI adoption in the classroom.
Participants engaged in an interactive “Fact vs Myth” Kahoot activity designed to address common misconceptions about AI and strengthen foundational understanding of key concepts. The session also included demonstrations of generative AI tools, comparative discussions on platforms such as Claude and NotebookLM, and practical exercises on prompt engineering. Faculty members actively contributed to discussions, sharing insights and experiences regarding the evolving role of AI in education.
The training series will continue over the coming weeks with additional sessions covering AI-powered educational tools, academic content and media production, learning analytics, intelligent academic ecosystems, research applications, academic writing, publication support, and the future of higher education in an AI-enabled environment.
Through this initiative, ULAB reaffirms its commitment to fostering innovation in teaching and learning while preparing faculty members to navigate the opportunities and challenges presented by emerging technologies.
