The Institutional Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) organized back-to-back workshops on University Governance on 27 August 2026 at PD 102, as part of its continuing efforts to strengthen institutional leadership, accountability, transparency, and quality assurance in higher education. The workshops brought together 52 university leaders, faculty members, and administrative officials for an in-depth discussion on the principles and practices of effective university governance and their importance for sustainable institutional development. The session examined key areas including governance structures, leadership responsibilities, decision-making processes, institutional accountability, transparency, and integrity in university administration.

Participants also discussed contemporary challenges in higher education governance and explored ways to strengthen coordination and collaboration among different university bodies. Particular attention was given to the Private University Act 2010, the development and implementation of effective policies and procedures, compliance with regulatory requirements, stakeholder participation, and mechanisms for continuous institutional improvement.

Professor Jude William R. Genilo, PhD, Pro Vice Chancellor and IQAC Director, highlighted the importance of understanding the philosophy behind the establishment of a university, its history, identity, liberal arts orientation, vision, mission, and core values as foundations for effective governance. He emphasized that good governance is not simply about structures and procedures; it also requires members of the university community to understand the institution they serve and to share responsibility for advancing its mission.

Dr. Wazir AF Ahmad, PhD, Additional Director, IQAC, discussed the role of systematic monitoring, university committees, evidence-based decision-making, internal controls, and regular evaluation in strengthening academic and administrative effectiveness. He emphasized that well-functioning governance systems provide the foundation for institutional accountability and continuous quality improvement.

The workshop reinforced the idea that quality assurance and good governance are closely interconnected. Effective governance provides the structures, policies, and accountability mechanisms necessary for quality assurance, while quality assurance provides evidence and systematic feedback to support better institutional decision-making. Through initiatives such as this, ULAB continues to foster a culture of good governance, accountability, transparency, quality, and continuous improvement, strengthening the university’s capacity to achieve academic excellence and fulfill its institutional mission.
